Metro of the Month: Denver

Job growth has been steady for quite some time in the Denver region, where the health care and aerospace industries have sizable presences. And even with recent declines in oil prices, the area’s energy sector still generates significant economic activity.

More than 2,500 companies and 30,000 workers belong to the energy industry in the Denver metro area, including the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, located in the city of Golden. It is the energy department’s primary research and development operation for alternative fuels, solar power and other types of energy efficiency.

The Denver metro region spans nine counties in northern Colorado. Some of the locally-headquartered Fortune 500 members include global payment services company Western Union, satellite television provider DISH Network and engineering and consulting company CH2M Hill.

Thanks to an ongoing $6.9 billion expansion of the Denver area’s mass transit service, construction and related real estate development should continue at a healthy pace in the near term. The 12-year transit project, which is expected to wrap up in 2017, will add 122 miles of new commuter rail and light rail service to the existing system.
